Driving and Parking in Belgrade: Rules, Zones and Tips
Red, yellow and green zones, paying by SMS or app, speed limits and mandatory headlights – a practical guide to relaxed driving in Belgrade.

Belgrade is best explored on wheels – from Kalemegdan and Dorćol to New Belgrade, Ada Ciganlija and Mount Avala. Like every capital, though, it has its own rules: zoned parking, heavy rush-hour traffic and a few local specifics worth knowing in advance. Here is what you need to know before setting off in your rental car.
Parking zones in Belgrade
Central Belgrade is divided into three parking zones, marked with colour-coded signs. Zones are charged on weekdays and Saturdays during posted hours, while parking on Sundays is generally free.
| Zone | Maximum stay | SMS number |
|---|---|---|
| Red zone | 1 hour | 9111 |
| Yellow zone | 2 hours | 9112 |
| Green zone | 3 hours | 9113 |
With a Serbian SIM card you pay by sending the licence plate (without spaces, e.g. BG123AB) to the zone number. SMS payment does not work with foreign numbers – use the official parking app, parking machines or a public garage instead.
Speed limits in Serbia
| Road type | Limit |
|---|---|
| Built-up areas | 50 km/h |
| Outside built-up areas | 80 km/h |
| Expressways | 100 km/h |
| Motorways | 130 km/h |
Road signs always take precedence over the general limits. Speed cameras operate at many locations in the city and on motorways.
Rules visitors often don’t know
- Dipped headlights are mandatory all day, not just at night.
- Blood alcohol limit is 0.2‰ – and zero for young and novice drivers.
- Seat belts are mandatory in all seats, front and rear.
- Phones may only be used hands-free.
- Winter equipment is mandatory from 1 November to 1 April in winter conditions – all our cars have it in season.
- Children under 3 must travel in a child seat; request one when booking.
Motorway tolls
Serbian motorways are tolled at toll plazas, payable in cash (RSD or EUR) or by card. The stretch from the airport into Belgrade is free, while you will pay tolls on the way to Novi Sad, Niš or Čačak.
When to avoid traffic
The heaviest traffic is on weekdays from 7:30 to 9:30 and from 15:30 to 18:30, especially on the Gazela bridge, Branko’s bridge, the Ada bridge and King Alexander Boulevard. If you can, cross the river outside these times or use a navigation app with live traffic.
Which car is best for Belgrade?
For the city centre and easy parking we recommend a compact economy car. If comfort in traffic is your priority, choose an automatic. For families and trips out of town, an SUV is ideal – compare them all on our cars page.
